As a Mother of a twice neurodiverse child who is neurodiverse herself, education is complicated. Educating neurodiverse kids, including those with Autism and ADHD, requires a unique approach that respects their individual needs and strengths. Neurodiverse education’s goal is to provide an inclusive learning environment where all kids can thrive. For this article, I am to explore the effective instructional strategies for neurodiverse kids, focusing on those with Autism and ADHD, seeing as that is what I know.

Understanding Neurodiverse Education

Neurodiverse education recognizes that every kid thinks and learns differently. This diversity includes kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Traditionally, teaching methods often do not cater to their unique needs, making it essential to adopt strategies that promote inclusivity and understanding for everyone.

IEPs should include specific goals tailored to the child’s abilities and interests. Collaborate with your special education team and professionals to create a plan that suits your child’s needs. Remember that you can invite anyone you want to join that meeting; utilize that. I encourage you to have the child’s therapist, at the least, write a recommendation letter if they can not physically or virtually attend that meeting.

As a millennial Mom, I get it; we were not taught to manage our feelings well. Most of us were smacked into compliance, we need to break the cycle. Positive reinforcement can motivate kids with ADHD. Use praise and rewards to acknowledge their efforts and achievements. This encourages them to stay focused and work towards their goals. Implementing a rewards system can be particularly effective in maintaining their attention and interest. It takes longer to work than corporal correction, but it is better in the long run.

There are not a lot of studies on the benefits of tech in neurodiverse education at the time of writing this, but there are lots on neurotypical kids. Families of neurotypical kids are told to limit tech; I, as a neurodiverse parent, would say this is not a good choice for neurodiverse kids. Our kids require more brain stimulation than neurotypical kiddos, and tech can help that. Educational apps and software designed for autistic and ADHD learners can make learning a more engaging and accessible goal. Here are some ways technology can be a tool to enhance the neurodiverse education:

Interactive tools like tablets and smartboards can make the lessons more engaging. These tools allow for interactive activities that cater to different learning styles. For instance, apps that provide visual and auditory stimuli can help neurodiverse children better understand complex concepts that they otherwise would not.

Assistive techs such as speech-to-text software and communication devices can aid neurodiverse kids in overcoming learning barriers. These tools can help kids who struggle with writing or verbal communication to participate more fully in the classroom. My son hates writing by hand, but he can type his work out without issue. It’s the little adjustments that matter.

Collaborating with Parents and Specialists

This collaborative approach ensures that the child receives continuous support from all sides.

Teachers should pursue ongoing professional development in neurodiverse education. Attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions can enhance their understanding and skills. Staying up to date and informed aboutr the latest research and strategies that teachers can provide the best possible education for neurodiverse kids should be the goal. I also always encourage teachers to listen to neurodiverse adults. There are so many of us out there eager to help and make the world better for the next generation. Just ask us, because we’ve been told so many times we are annoying when we volunteer the information.
